The Brasserie Menu

Private Dining At The Brasserie

We’ve always offered private dining to customers in our Brasserie at The Carlton, and perhaps now that’s more important to you now than ever.

You can book our library for up to six guests dining together for a really intimate private room. Perhaps you’ve a small family gathering and happy to share one of our quieter nooks in the Brasserie itself. Distinct in the space, but secluded enough to enjoy your own company.

When you private dine with us you can enjoy the run of our house menu, or chef will create a special menu tailored to your needs. Just ask when you book.

Guests have used our private dining for many occasions, including anniversary dinners, funeral wakes, shielding for health reasons, confidential events, special celebrations and many more.

The Perfect Setting

Our private dining spaces offer the perfect setting to enjoy a meal, freshly prepared in our kitchen using some of the best local produce around. Simple dishes that are prepared from scratch – without fuss. We serve an informal dinner menu seven days a week, with a complimentary all day lighter option.  Do look out for our Foodie Friday monthly dinner dates and our monthly treat at a great price. On rotation we feature steaming mussels, hand-made burgers, quality steaks and stunning local fish, paired with drinks for a bargain price.

Best In Class Covid Measures

We are part of The Carlton Hotel in Ilfracombe. An independent business that is owner operated. Our small team is led by Michael and Eliot and offer a wonderful experience in hospitality. As much as we love to welcome guest’s we also take the safety of our team, and customers very seriously. You can find out more about our Covid-19 measures here

We’ve adapted the way we work due to the Coronavirus, which means broadly:

  • Our menu has changed to reflect safe ways of working in the kitchen
  • Limitations to some supplies from our producers and farmers
  • Safe way of serving our customers and guests
  • No walk ins only pre-booked guests
  • Table service only is offered

Fresh Food, Locally Sourced

We love to find new suppliers, whether they’re Devon families who’ve been growing, rearing or selling produce for generations or new, artisan makers of craft food and drink products, of which there are many in the county.

Take our prime beef cuts from Waytown Farm on the edge of Exmoor. A farm that’s been in the same family since the 12th century. Our other quality meats are supplied by Tony the Butcher of Plaistow.

Fish and seafood are key ingredients in our larder. And you are guaranteed to enjoy some of the best fresh fish from the market at Appledore.  Why? Because this is where our fishmonger goes each day, and in turn returns to our kitchen, with quality produce landed off local day boats. Add to that mussels that are picked at low tide in Westward Ho! then cleaned in Phoebe Chopes tanks at Instow. In all a great basket of local and seasonal ingredients that are truly sustainable.

With some interesting craft beers in stock from our truly local brewery and a selection from Madrigal brewery too our drinks will surprise you.

Menus adapt to the seasons, so there’s always something new to try whatever time of year you arrive – you may even catch the local asparagus season if you’re lucky!

Relaxed Dining

We offer a casual, relaxed dining environment, that matches the simplicity of our food.

Arrive early for a pre meal drink in our bar or lounge, and please don’t rush off at the end of your meal.

Breakfast includes all the light buffet options, to full English breakfasts including thick cut bacon and Exmoor pork sausage, our famous bacon or sausage sandwiches and not forgetting kippers and poached haddock – with those wonderful Farmer Bob eggs.

Above all, we like you to feel relaxed when dining so you can enjoy traditional favourites as well as more specialised options, from steaks and burgers to curries and veggie risottos – but do make sure you leave room for one of our classic desserts.

Sunday lunch is a highlight, leaving you ready for a countryside walk, or armchair snooze, and the well-stocked bar is always available for a chilled-out drink or to sample something from our carefully curated wine list.

Made From Scratch

We prepare and cook the majority of our dishes from scratch, so we can easily adapt dishes. That means we can ensure the freshest local ingredients are used and if you’re gluten intolerant, lactose aware or don’t like the taste, we can accommodate your needs.

Ethically Sourced Ingredients

We make use of the most seasonal, local, regional and appropriate produce and ingredients. Using seasonal ingredients is a sure way to help reduce the carbon footprint of our business and really helps the local economy.

Gluten Free & Vegan Friendly Dishes

Our Gluten Free menu is always available. From breakfast to dinner we have ingredients that are suitable for guests with gluten allergy, coeliac or intolerances.

What Customers Say

“We were recommended Sunday lunch here by neighbours, and we weren’t disappointed. We were looked after by staff who displayed old fashioned courtesy, from taking and hanging up our coats to the very attentive restaurant staff.
The food was absolutely delicious, a measured menu, cooked and seasoned perfectly. The decor and ambiance was second to none, we had an infant with us, and everyone was most accommodating.
We will certainly be visiting again, and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting a substantial Sunday lunch” add name?

Just back from the St Patrick’s Day lunch and what can I say? What a stunning brasserie! Very classy decor and tasteful… wonderful helpful staff…. Nick, Dawn and Sue were certainly working their socks off but still had time to be cheery with each and every diner. The food was exquisite, beautifully presented… and delicious! Michael was an exceptional and charming host and has without a doubt worked very hard to put this lovely brasserie on the map. I am a local and will be recommending The Brasserie to other locals and friends eager to stay in Ilfracombe.” Sue Ratcliff
